Contract law and state tax law, criminal law as well as operational law and international law. Master of Laws programs are offered by the law faculties of the University of Hong Kong, the Open University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the City University of Hong Kong. An LL.B. is usually required for admission, but for some specialized programs, such as the LL.M. in a human rights program offered by the HKU, require a Bachelor of Laws or related discipline. In the United States, earning an LL.M. is often a way to specialize in an area of law such as tax law, business law, international business law, healthcare law, litigation, environmental law, or intellectual property. A number of schools have J.D.-LL.M. Programs, while others offer the degree through online studies.
Some LL.M. The programs offer a general study of American law. Graduation requirements vary by school and often differ for LL.M. students who have already earned a JD from a U.S. law school and LL.M. students who have already earned a law degree from a non-U.S. law school. Program Outcomes: Law graduates typically pursue careers in law-related fields such as business, human resources, regulatory agencies, law enforcement, and social work. Skills such as working with contracts, understanding the legal procedures associated with transactions, and ensuring compliance with the law can help students move forward in these areas. To be a lawyer in the Netherlands, you need an LL.M. with a (series of) specific courses in procedural law. The Order of the Dutch Bar Association (NOVA) requires these courses for any potential trainee lawyer who wishes to be written conditionally to the District Court for three years.
Upon receipt of all the diplomas prescribed by NOVA and under the supervision of a “patrouon” (master), a lawyer has the right to have his own firm and is written unconditionally in a court for life, but he must constantly update his knowledge. There are a variety of other career opportunities for those earning a JD. This includes non-profit and government management, compliance work, and legal writing and publishing. A J.D. will provide you with the skills you need for a variety of careers outside the legal field. Academic Experience: MLS programs typically cover a variety of legal topics to give students a solid foundation in all aspects of law. Courses may cover legal topics such as contracts, regulatory compliance, negotiation theory and administrative law. In addition, students are sometimes required to participate in personal learning experiences that give them the opportunity to practice their newly acquired legal skills. MLS programs typically last from 16 to 28 months, depending on the full-time or part-time options. The highest law degree is the Doctor of Laws (S.J.D.
or J.S.D., depending on the institution), and it is equivalent to the Doctor of Philosophy in Law (Ph.D. or DPhil) or Doctor of Laws (in France). The full equivalent in Germany is the Doctor of Law (Dr. iur.) (but German universities require the preparation of a second doctoral thesis, an habilitation, in order to qualify for teaching as a full professor, but can waive this requirement and usually do so for qualified foreigners). There are also various doctorates, such as the D.C.L. (Doctor of Civil Law), which is awarded by McGill University in Canada. Most schools require an LL.M. prior to admission to an S.J.D.

Like the PhD, the S.J.D. degree usually requires a thesis that is graded (often by two proofreaders), defended verbally (by an exam known as viva voce), and then often published as a book or series of articles. The Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) degree in the United States is usually an honorary title. If you are a professional looking for a legal career or a law-related profession, it is important to remember that a Juris Doctor (JD) is not the only type of law degree available to you. As you pursue your law study options, you must first consider the specific legal skills you need to advance your career. Certain types of law degrees, such as the JD, prepare you to pass the bar exam and practice as a lawyer in the courtroom or in a more traditional legal setting. Other non-JD law degrees, such as the Master of Legal Studies (MLS) or the Master of Dispute Resolution (MDR), provide you with useful legal skills in almost every field. Program Results: After earning this degree and developing expertise in the subject of their choice, LLM graduates typically pursue their careers as lawyers, but serve a more specialized clientele. These highly competitive areas may include international law, human rights law, intellectual property protection laws and health law.
The University of Oxford unconventionally names its Master of Laws B.C.L. (Bachelor of Civil Law) and M.Jur. (Magister Juris) and its research supervisors either MPhil (Master of Philosophy) or MSt (Master of Studies). Oxford continues to call its most important postgraduate degree in law the B.C.L. for largely historical reasons, as the B.C.L. is one of the oldest (and therefore oldest in the Oxford hierarchy) degrees awarded since the sixteenth century. M.Jur. was introduced in 1991. At this time, there is no LL.M. awarded by the university. Oxford states that the B.C.L. is “the most respected master`s degree teaching qualification in the common law world.” In addition, the University of Oxford introduced the MSc in Law and Finance (MLF) in 2010.
The degree is taught jointly by the Faculty of Law and the Saïd Business School. The MLF program includes a combination of financial and economic courses combined with BCL law courses. University College Dublin also offers the Master in Common Law (MCL/Magisterii in Jure Communi, M.Jur.Com), an advanced two-year programme for non-legal graduates. The diploma is a legal degree eligible for the entrance exams of the Honourable Society of King`s Inns. Program Results: Graduates of a JD program of study must pass a bar exam to practice law in the United States. Only after passing the bar exam can students become admitted lawyers. As soon as you are done with the abbreviation of lawyer word J.D., you can take a state exam. Each state has its own exam based on state law that gives you the right to practice as a lawyer in that state. If you want to work as a lawyer, you must be licensed. When you hold a license, you will receive the abbreviation of lawyer Esq., which means Esquire.
In Germany, the LL.M. is considered to be a complementary legal training. Therefore, Master of Laws programs are generally open not only to law graduates, but also to graduates of related subjects or to those who have a genuine interest and connection to the particular Master of Laws program. Some graduates opt for their LL.M. directly after their “First State Examination in Law” (the “First State Examination” is the first stage of official German legal education and completes the German Law Diploma as a lawyer equivalent to the Master`s degree), an alternative postgraduate course or their “Second State Examination in Law” (i.e. the second and final stage of the official German legal day school training, fully qualified lawyers, who then have access to various branches of the legal profession).
